Congenital penis curvature

It is important to have in mind that the penis only bends during erection, when the tissues are stretched. In order to have a straight erection, all tissues that make up the penis must have the same resilience. When a man has a curved penis, the curvature may result from less resilience of the tissues outside the tunic or less resilience of the tunic itself, caused by problems during its formation. However, there are cases in which both problems are combined.

Angles of up to 30º from the central axis to the left, to the right or upwards are considered normal, provided they do not get in the way psychologically or functionally. When the curve is downward, only angles up to 15º are compatible with good sexual performance because the vagina axis is upwards, which prevents proper mutual adaptation. If a man is left-handed, his penis is usually curved to the right, and if he is right-handed, his penis tends to lean to the left.

However, some men are born with a sharply curved penis, which causes aesthetic and functional difficulties. It is considered that a deviation from 30º on makes the sexual act increasingly difficult. The functional problem may happen because of penetration difficulty or impossibility and also after penetration, as the penis may easily get out of the vagina during intercourse. In many cases, the penis curvature may cause discomfort to the partner.

Most of the time, the teenager or young adult thinks his case has no solution, or is too embarrassed to bring up the subject with anyone, even his own parents, which is very bad and may impair his development on a sexual, psychological and professional level and also interpersonal relationship and self-esteem.

The advantage of an early diagnosis about congenital curved penis is to prepare the young man for an eventual correction and provide him with psychological guidance to face the problem associated with his sexuality with no trauma, as it can be the cause of great embarrassment and deep psychological distress. Late discovery may cause countless and very serious traumatic consequences to the young man, compromising his sexual, psychological and social development. It is important not to be afraid and/or ashamed, as this is a more common problem than most people think, and the sooner something is done about it, fewer problems the young man will have in the future.

Such curvatures were exclusively treated by means of surgery until recently. Amazing results are currently being obtained in correcting such curvature by applying continuous traction on the penis. This treatment, if properly done, has corrected penis curvatures satisfactorily, in most cases avoiding surgical treatment with its risks and complications.
